FWIW every time there's one of those "this is how much airline pilots make" posts on social media, the majority of responses are some variation of "good, it's a tough job with huge responsibility and demanding schedules, they deserve every penny", so I think we have more sympathy out there than you think. The average American is still not 100% comfortable flying from my anecdotal observation on the line, and they don't mind if their pilots, who hold their life in their hands, are well paid. The recent media attention on some high profile incidents only magnifies this feeling. If ALPA gets its messaging right, we'll have all the support we need from the traveling public.
Very good point. “Pay them whatever they want!” is most often the sentiment I see.
