Current fuel costs aren't anywhere the near "true" cost, but are far more driven by similar market forces that drove electric rates in CA a couple years back to record levels, along with rolling black-outs. The total electricity supply is identical this year to then (thanks to the enviro-socialists barring new power plants) while demand has increased, yet there is no "shortage" this summer....hmmm. Pricing of oil has similarly less to do with supply/demand than speculation and market manipulation by our Arab and S.A. dictator buddies. The demand from China and India hasn't increased in the last year as much as the price has it? Bush does certainly seem useless calling in favors from his Saudi buddies (they did hold hands though) or the Iraq stooges he installed and Barry Obama isn't helping saying going after more now won't help. It is a Bush/Gore worthy gaffe to say that (to paraphrase) drilling today won't lower the price at the pump next month. Of course not moron, but ask him if he's sending his daughters to college and he'll say of course. So ask him if that will make them smarter next month and you'll get that same deer in the headlights look that we'll be seeing a lot more of leading to November...should make for good comedy.
We can only hope that things will seek equilibrium somehow before we actually do go into deep recession...I just hope it doesn't take too much government monkeying (maybe just the threat of it would do the trick) to stop the seemingly runaway train.
