I believe there is somewhere between 12 to 14 percent of the pilots who are on reserve and I believe less than 10 total who are not voluntarily on the reserve schedule. Most of them do it for the money and know what they are getting themselves into when they sign up for it. A 5th year captain makes about $16000 more per year on reserve and I have flown with a few of those guys who are quite happy to make that much more. I have been on reserve for 5 months and I've only worked the full 18 the first month while in training and then again last month when I did multiple extended days. The reserve here has more days off than most airlines (at least at the regional level) reserve minimum days off.
