In my opinion it was a very poor managerial decision to have 8 different contracts knowing you didnt want them all in the long run, neither one of the companies is going down without a litigation fight (except xjt). But airlines are not known for managerial savvy.
They didn't know they didn't want them. It wasn't until oil hit the roof that they had to start at making some tough decisions.
