Except that is not how it works in JFK. You have to stay on ground till the ramp clears you in (you should be talking to ramp on the other radio)...since most of the ramps are dead-ends (only one way in and out) and they down want you blocking A or B taxi ways for more than a minute or so. If the ramp is blocked ground will move you someplace where your not in the way.
