You usually call ramp on the ground to check the status of your gate. You fly in there a few times and you KNOW that ground is going to ask you the status of your gate, it's best to be prepared. But no, it's not written anywhere.

There are a lot of JFnKisms that you just pick up and do after flying in and out of there for a while.
