Alternatives do exist, we just need people to be responsible enough to use them. No government intervention is needed. Wind power, solar, geothermal heating and cooling, bio-fuels...these are all ways that we as consumers can reduce our dependency on oil so that the demand for it slows and each of these methods are attainable for individuals. There is a bit more of an initial investment, but we must remember that it is an investment into our own futures. Maybe eating out a little less and watching the budget is worth that much...but unfortunately to some it is not.
