Looked at doing the ANG to AFRES transition back in 2000. At the unit level, I still had to clear the standard wickets (interview, pledge, buy a few beers, show my face in the bar, etc). Seems like there was this "Special Examination Unit" in GA (Dobbins?) that is sort of the clearinghouse for all AFRES applications. Mind you was I applying for an ART position, not a traditional so don't know if it would apply in that case. I filled out the paperwork and got a letter in the mail sometime later essentially saying I was blessed by them to be an AFRES pilot.

Also, as you probably know, the 2LT wingman can be a Technician in the ANG and be a GS-13, but AFRES is a little more particular about req'ts. Might only be a GS-11 as a wingman, GS-12 as FLight Lead, and then GS-13 when made an IP.

Lastly, I'm pretty sure AFTP's and UTA's are the same (48 of each for traditional).

OK, that's all I remember. For some standard family reasons, I ended up not pursuing that AFRES job and stayed ANG. Probably need to get some AFRES dudes to chime in.
