I remember doing an essay, but I'm a year behind you. Not sure if it was optional or not, but knowing me I don't think I would have done it if it was optional! I'm not sure who all reads those essays, but I can tell you that personality counts, and an essay could probably make a big difference if you're a borderline student.
If I didn't get accepted to Purdue my second choice was the ASU flight program that is tied to the Mesa cesspool (cough, cough, I mean pilot development program). They offered me a $28,000 scholarship and I got nothing from Purdue. I got a 29 on the ACT, but if you get in the thirties I think they start offering money.
To fatboy: I know this is just a message board, but it's not a bad idea to work on your grammar now. It's one thing to get lazy if you're a pilot closer to retirement than date of hire, it's something completely different when you're trying to get into college. Just a piece of advice.
