There are plenty of places to go in the city, and outside of it that you can get back within 2 hrs. Just put a set of clothes together in a day bag and leave it in the crew room or put them in your flight case. Just carry your ID with you just in case you have to go in, then call for last on days you go out.
Since I got online in 6 mos, i've had 2 same day calls, and only worked maybe max 2 in every 10 Rsv days. There are museums, national park sites, cool places to see (empire state, rockerfeller center nbc studios, etc...)
By 2 or so, add liberty, ellis and governor's islands to the list, as by 2 same day calls are virtually impossible. Just be ready to get on the ferry around 2 ish and you're home free.
Think of Rsv as paid time to see NYC.
You could get ballsy and leave around noon and hit up DC or Boston. Those are a little more risky, for same day calls, but, no risk, no reward. There's so much you can do. Do it until your schedule changes so you can't without using vacation.
So your saying since you have been LGA based you have worked maybe 2 in 10 reserve days for the most part? I don't mind the down time so much as I did when I was MDT based, out there it was nothing but corn.
My thing is I live about 1:45 minutes from the airport. But then again you have to get to the parking lot, take the shuttle bus to the terminal, get through security, then finally check in, and that can take another half hour if not more. I thought many times just sitting reserve at home, they usually give you more then 2 hours notice anyways, but at the same time I am kind of scared, especially since I am on probation and now isnt the worst time to lose a flying job, so I am renting a room where I stayed during college here in NYC. I like it, it is just a little pricey.
Only reason I would like to fly more is because I have an agenda that I would like to start working on, and it is expensive, and includes more flight time. So that is the only reason for my impatience.
What is the latest PDT usually calls you in if you start reserve at 5AM? I imagine by like 4-5 o'clock there isnt much they can do with you since its a 2 hour call-out and now your running out of duty-time. ?
