Similarly, is the 5 hrs based on "flight time"...or "total travel time" (i.e. flight time, plus layover connection, plus flight time)?
Thanks.
Not sure you got the answer you were looking for...
5hr rule is based on what you actually fly:
1)If the scheduled D/H is over 5hrs and booked in 1st class, but your deviation flight is less than 5hrs...You're limited to purchasing a coach ticket.
2)If the scheduled D/H is under 5hrs, but your deviation flight is over 5hrs...You're eligible for 1st class. Assuming you have enough bank money. Your bank remains based on the coach scheduled D/H.
The 5hrs is based on block times.
The 11:30 rule is based on duty times, including your deviation legs. Like Flybynight said...If you D/H home same duty time, it is quite easy to exceed the 11:30 and make yourself eligible for a 1st class ticket. Again, your bank will not change, just your eligibility.
