Not the smartest thing to do given that:

1. They WILL believe you

2. It may be pretty easy for a pilot to tell the difference on approach, but pax may just have a harder time

Even then, I wouldn't be too harsh on the guy. It's commendable that somebody can find time for humor with the industry in it's current state. Perhaps a chat with the chief would be in order, but noting permanent or severe.
