Why is it so terrible if they call their aircraft the "9"? Is that what we are worrying about today? Is the DC-9 the only aircraft that can be called a "9"?

actually, i have heard some 900 guys up on their high horse bragging about the plane. but why would they call it the "9" anyway. shouldn't it be the 9...hundred? i don't call the saab the 3, or the three fo.
