I'd say it's more like the squeegee men in Manhattan: unsolicited and unasked and whether you like or not, they perform a "service," then demand payment whether you wanted the "service" or not. Just like with the squeegee men, there's usually intimidation involved as well.
Unfortunately, the difference here is you're forced to pay your dues, whether you join the union or not. You DO have a right to demand refund of any portion of your dues used for political contributions, PACs, etc.
