First of all, it's the American way...look at the whole money fiasco. Refinance as a form of income and then act surprised when the well runs dry.

Having had my first (unfortunately not last) furlough 18 years ago I get it. In many career paths in this business it's like death and taxes...they WILL come, it's just that you hope one is on the front end of several years and the other on the other .

Stability is the whole reason I sought this place out when 90% of the rest of the crowd was drooling over UAL, AA and DAL. A CFO friend of mine (who didn't know or care about airlines at the time because he was in the tech biz out here in CA) did an overview of the companies (not just pax carriers) that hired pilots, and in '90 told me to seek out (in order) a job at UPS, FDX and SWA and then a small handful of corporations with dedicated flight departments due strictly on their balance sheets and business models. It's no accident that IMO UPS will be the last operator to furlough, if at all.

Having said that...I keep my CFI current, so even I'm a bit paracautious when it comes to this business.
