This is the legal requirement. There are no caveats or exclusions, you can use an expired written, regardless as to how long ago it was taken or what your employment history was along the way. You just need to be employed in 121/125/135 at the time of the practical test and posses a passed written.

Company policies may differ, ask your training dept.
