I think this is an expensive lesson for you. If you aren't familiar with an airport, ALWAYS call ahead, even a day or so in advance never hurts. Get their hours of ops etc... Another quick and easy source is

When I flew 135 freight, you never knew where you were going, or who you'd need to be there, so I always took an extra minute or two to find a number and call. Never assume!!!
