The Challenger was actually designed as a replacement for the Falcon 20s. FX wanted an aircraft that could accomidated full-size containers and later be stretched when deregulation hit. Canadair designed the 600, which has grown into the CRJ family. Deregulation hit earlier for cargo, and 727s were available so they only ordered 3 600s for executive use.

I understand the first one was a bene for Fred buying so many. They gave it to him because he ordered something like 60 of them. Then when dereg hit, he sold all the options on these at a profit and stlll got to keep the first one. Not a bad deal....
