They did it because US Air has better brand recognition on the east coast, and in the lucrative European market, Cactus had no brand recognition whatsoever. Purely a marketing decision.
A HP / DAL merger seems pretty far-fetched, but when I first heard rumors of the HP / USAir merger I didn't believe that for a second either...oops
