Im not at a major, not even an instructor... but this is what I did and Im doing:

At 17 I started studying Computer Science for a year (didnt have in mind to study aviation).., I realized computer science wasnt for me.

At 18 I switched to Business Administration for another year... I realized I wasnt interested in studying that...

Then four a couple of months I started thinking what do I REALLY wanted to do.. what did I LIKE to do?... I always... ALWAYS loved airplanes.... Been playing flight sim since the very first of its games was created... and I just always loved it. But for some reason I always had in the back of my mind the fact that It was going to be very tough to have a family if I ever studied aviation. But I said... screw that... My grades were horrible At school, and I was not motivated at all.

So I switched to an aviation career at a local community college and started flying. My GPA increased from a poor 2.6 to a decent 3.5. I became super motivated and have been like that since I switched. Getting very good grades even in subjects not related to aviation (Trig, statistics, MacroEconomics Microeconomics, etc etc etc). Now Im on my senior year at Embry-Riddle Extended Campus in Miami (which is a lot cheaper for me than going to Daytona) and currently working on my Comm Multi License. If im lucky and I get a job at an airline some day, I plan to do something else on the side as well (own business, real state, whatever) and make a living out of it. I dont need a degree in those areas to do it.

I have no idea what my future will be like, but for me this was the only way to get through college. Without motivation I would't have been able to continue towards any degree.

Hope this helps, happy thanksgiving!
