From Fltnews.com:

The ARJ 21 is built using tooling provided by McDonnell Douglas for licenses production of the MD-90. The ARJ21 has a strong resemblance to the DC-9 series aircraft with identical nose profile and cabin cross-section. The ARJ21 has a new supercritical wing fitted with winglets. It also features western avionics, a fly-by-wire flight control system, and General Electric engines. The initial variant will be the -700. Additional variants will include a stretched fuselage, extended range models, a cargo airplane, and a business jet variant.
