Ever watched a 5'2" 95 pound FA try to open the main cabin door on the CRJ from the ground? I'm 5'7" and it's a pain in the ass to get the leverage with your hand stretched above your head. It would be immensely tougher if I were 5" shorter and 40 pounds lighter. We've got some FAs that could probably hang from the door handle without the door budging.
As long as they can open the door from the inside then they can do their job. If they are outside the aircraft then there isn't anyone onboard for them to evacuate.
