NWA will have 58 DC-9's on 1 Jan. The replacement aircraft have already been ordered and sadly the flying will be outsourced as the last 100 DC-9's had the flying outsourced. I really don't see Delta having any interest in operating the 717. The EMB-190 is more efficient and available in the numbers Delta might need. It looks like however that Delta is going to wait for the Bombardiar C series if and when they ever buy a 100 seat aircraft.
I would agree, and the new Delta already has a lot of different aircraft types in it's fleet to begin with. I would think that right now management is probably looking at the most efficient way to consolidate the fleet into fewer aircraft types in the years ahead. There's alot of options as to placing the "right" aircraft size on the right routes, but training costs and day to day efficiency will probably suffer in the long run.
