If you're wanting to live in a place worth living SAT IS NOT one of the cheapest places in the country. As far as commute goes you shouldn't have any problem going SAT-DFW or IAH-DFW. I'm not sure about Austin. I know CAL does a TON of flights everyday between AUS and IAH and they are all full.
