The answer is, whatever your seniority allows.

I was hired as a DC-10 SO, one year later I was able to hold MD-11 FO, but would not have been able to hold MD-11 FO for the next couple bids after that (~18 months as junior MD-11 FO at FedEx), and then just recently upgraded to MD-11 Capt after 9 yrs in the right seat. I could have gone to B727 Capt almost 5 yrs earlier, but why?

So, seniority is the answer!
