Well times have changed. Back in the 70 and 80's you did not want to be terminated. Companies would terminate so they could get out of paying unemployment. You could apppeal and only if the employer did not show for the hearing were you going to get unemployment
State laws vary. In some, you get paid unless you quit. In others, the employer does not have to pay if they can prove that you were fired for cause (but incompetence is not usually considered "cause". "Cause" is stealing, harassment, excessive absence, making a pass at the boss' wife, etc.).
