Most schools begin with "the". Such as The University of Michigan. For some reason it just took off when he said it. I'm still on the fence about it.
I live near Cincinnati, safely away from campus but still full of those annoying alumni. The school administration would make noise whenever someone would refer to the school without using the "The". Very "affected" - as if they are the only university in Ohio. Many of the 'all-stars' now use "The" when they recite the school name on TV, etc. Ohio University (actually the first university in Ohio, IIRC) came out with a t-shirt that says "Ohio, THE State University".

My comments above are a dig at the administration only. It's a fine school overshadowed (to its detriment, I think) by a successful football team.
