It's a method and opportunity for everyone to synchronize their watches to the same time. Since everything in the schedule is based on a time, and the times are carefully spaced, it's important that everyone uses the same standard for time. If takeoffs are scheduled at 3 minute intervals, but your watch is 3 minutes slow, there will likely be a conflict.

As a cultural phenomenon, it also serves as a point of focus. OK, I'm doing a time hack, it's time to get down to business. Compartmentalize everything else, put the problems at home and the noise the car was making and all that other stuff out of your mind - - it's time to focus and go to work.
