Depends on how they set things up. I don't know the underlying financial situation at Mesa other than it sucks but I know companies have purchased other companies without having to handle all their debts ie Bank of America and Countrywide.
Now this could be different because they are financial institutions and them holding debt could be different than an airline holding debt being owed to a bank.
