I want to support cruise's great insights here, I think he's right on the money. I'd also like to repeat what I've mentioned in another thread:

Just remember it could always be worse. I just got terminated from an employer for being under the suspicion of organizing a union.

You may see some quick change without a union, sure. But if things really turn south, I'm sure management's compassion for their labor force will be nowhere to be seen.
