I hadn't seen that yet. If true, they had some more magic available to them for their first ditching. Do you have a link to that report? Actually, the point was they could stall if in Alternat Law, not that they did.
If what you say is true then I'll assume they manually deployed the RAT just in case. Prudent move in a time compressed situation.
