Ok. So how do reserves get their assignments? They get the trips that someone calls in sick for, doesn't connect to or otherwise doesn't have a pilot assigned to it. So open time, what happens to open time inside of 24 hours to the show? Well inside 24 hours they assign it to reserves, I'm sure you, just like me, when you were on reserve were capable of seeing what you MIGHT be flying the next day by checking open time. Now instead of letting it sit in open time, you (a line holder) pick it up. Now you fly it, does the reserve fly? No. And that's how picking up open time prevents recalls. Reserves don't get assignments, they stay under guarentee and there's no reason to recall. As for junior manning, I agree you have to answer while you're on duty and you can't avoid an acars message, but it was my understanding that PSA isn't in Junior Manning mode.... so that kinda a moot point isn't it.

Make more $$$ and pay ALPA more. Put more money in your 401K so you can retire way before 65. That will help out all the pilots move up the ladder faster.
Picking up Open time helps Pilots get jobs.
1) We are all adults -- name calling and physical threats are not necessary.
2) We all want the same result: recall.
3) We have different ideas about how to get that result.
I really liked the way Blueskies broke it down, but seafeye has a point. It costs the company more than the guarantee they are already paying a reserve when somebody picks up opentime. What you (seafeye) don't factor in is the cost of canceled flights, paying other carriers for rerouting passengers, hotel expenses for 50-70 people, etc.
USAirways has strugggled to improve their image over the years. The success of running very lean depends on how much of a risk they are willing to take. Image, like trust, takes a very short time to ruin, and a very long time to restore.
