I thought they did make you buy two seats here in the states - or at least I am sure that there was a law suit or media attention on this very subject some time ago. I'm not so sure about you not having to share your seat up front though! I flew out to Orlando and back to San Diego this past weekend and I saw at least one CA that I thought may have overflowed his seat in the FO's territory!
