I flip on the batteries and the avionics, then check the GPU voltage, if that is good, I shut the avionics off and connect the GPU and then go from there...
That's how I've been doing it. I don't know if that's how I learned it (I'm assuming so) or just the habit I got into thinking that I will be less likely to possibly damage the avionics.
