New Airline to Launch in 2010
Reuters - 03/14/2009; A new start-up airline has announced plans to begin flying in 2010. According to a company press release, "JOAir will use a radically different business model. The current economic situation is tailor-made for our bold new vision of air travel for Americans."
JOAir plans to use Airbus A380 aircraft configured to seat 1500 passengers in scheduled service from the Mesa Gateway airport located in the southeast portion of the Phoenix metroplex. Government sources have stated that three area cities and Maricopa county have agreed to construct terminal and ramp facilities at the airport capable of accommodating four A380 aircraft simultaneously. The Airbus A380 is the world's largest aircraft. JOAir plans to operate the aircraft in domestic service in a high density seating configuration.
JOAir plans to take advantage of the cancellation of A380 orders by other airlines to seek early delivery of the aircraft. The airline plans to create innovative revenue sources such as the sale of naming rights for each aircraft, saturation advertising throughout the aircraft interior, and an all-you-can-eat buffet.
When asked about planned service, the spokesman stated, "We will initiate service to five US cities from the Gateway airport with four aircraft. We will add destinations in Canada, Mexico, Central America, and South America beginning in 2011. We will fly to any US city willing to build or modify an airport to handle the A380.
Company sources state that an expedited FAA approval process is anticipated due to the fact that the airline will operate under an already existing air carrier certificate.
