The only thing I can think of is that they haven't tried to hide what was there before. But someone with 2.2 hours of multi who changes the number to 4.4 with white-out or by crossing and re-writing has basically done the same thing...
It's an FAA thing. I've had several POI's tell me that when they inspect they like to be able to see the old number and see the new number. With white-out they can't; with a single line and the new number beside it, they can see the trail. Therefore a lot of companies have adopted the process. I know when I inspect a logbook, I like to see just a line-out correction instead of white-out. It gives me the "feeling" the candidate isn't trying to hide something. And in an interview, you have about 15 minutes to make your mind up about someone...
