The farthest I have ever heard an aircraft cleared, was when I was flying nights between BUR and OAK and as I was departing BUR and on LA Center's freq over Gorman VOR there would be an Aer Lingus flight and I heard,

"Shamrock XX, cleared direct Dublin"
Not doubting the validity of what you heard, but theres no way LA center can "clear" a flight over the Atlantic Ocean. You have to obtain oceanic clearance from Gander on VHF, sometimes through Moncton Center, or HF. Maybe he was kidding or "Dublin" ironically could have been a waypoint on the flight plan...hmmm?
