gratuity - Definition from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary
Main Entry:gra·tu·ity
Pronunciation: \grə-ˈtü-ə-tē, -ˈtyü-\
Function:noun
Inflected Form(s):plural gra·tu·itiesDate:1540

something given voluntarily or beyond obligation usually for some service ; especially : tip

I tip when service meets this definition. i.e service is expected, thats their job, when they voluntarily go beyond their obligation in their service I will go beyond my obligation of payment and tip them.
When someone expects a tip from me for simply doing their job they will be sorely disappointed, maybe if enough people actually tipped based off of service rather than guilt or expectation we would actually get descent service in this country.
Yes, I have had people get upset at me because I didnt tip them or tip them well enough (in their opinion) and I have flat out told them they didnt earn it. Sorry, you dont get something for nothing in life and you sure arn't getting the money I earned for doing the bare minimum of your job requirement (picking me up at the airport and driving me to the hotel you work for).
