If the job doesn't pay enough, then don't take the job. If enough people did that, the job would pay more... then you wouldn't have this problem. As long as management can get away with paying poor wages because people will slave away working overtime to make ends meet, then management keeps more money.... and wages won't change because the job is getting done.

paying a 20-50% overides is much much much cheaper than paying an entire salary plus full benefits. As long as they can fill XX number of hours per day with OT then they won't need extra pilots. As long as the pay is substandard, the pilots will NEED to work those extra hours... it's a symbiotic relationship. The key is to get your extra income somewhere else, and not to reward the airline management for their mismanagement. Is there a time and a place to do overtime; sure there is. When it suits your purposes, not theirs.
