This scenario might sound overly pessimistic, but that is what a process approach to safety is all about.

Actually, if you have to shut one down, you have now increased your endurance, albeit at a slower airspeed usually. We have run this scenario using the AFM performance charts. It was a "food for thought" conversation to show that if it got that dire a situation, you could actually shut down a "good" engine to increase range. Things that make you go "Hmmmm".
