It's true that many of us who left discovered that we could have made a
lot more money had we stayed, due to the factors you mention. But you would be surprised at how happy we are to be retired, even with a greatly reduced income. I went (reluctantly) at 55, and had no idea how tired I had become of commuting, hotel rooms, etc. until that all disappeared.
