No, incorrect. The article says they confirmed they were missing a wheel when asked by ATC. As in "Hey Colgan, are you missing a wheel"...pilot looks and realizes they are missing a wheel and responds back "yes, we are missing it"
Dont just assume they knew they lost a wheel and said "the heck with it," and continued to taxi
