Normally a pilot would be immediately turned over to the Luftwaffe, assuming he wasn't murdered by vengeful townfolk before an officer arrived. There may have been a short-lived new policy (kill the terrorfliegers!), or - more likely - a mid-level SS guy overstepped his authority and was eventually brought up short.
