A glance up final is ALWAYS important, but especially internationally. In Caracas one time we were cleared to pos & hold, looking right up at a herc on 1/2 mile final. I've always wondered if the controller thought the herc was so obvious, he didn't need to point it out. It was obvious to us, at least.
