This Merit you speak of, is it given by the company or a union? Is this Merit earned as a result of not writing up something at an outstation?, not calling in sick for the flu?, actually answering your phone on a day off to be JR manned? ect...
You have to excuse him somewhat. Our young junior friend has a very simplistic view of reality. He ignores many factors completely in his conclusion. For instance, as one small example, I do not know too many people offering to be Doctors for free in exchange for the "experience." The endless availability of low/free labor has had a dramatic effect on the profession, yet he completely ignores this in his zeal to blame seniority.
