I like tower wind reports. I will go so far as to get a wind check... old military habit when its particularly gusty or turbulent. Last fall when Hurricane Gustav was bearing down on the upper gulf coast another pilot and I were flying an Encore from TEB to MOB. The first gust fronts and Tstorms were blowing thru the area on our arrival. We called the field at 4500 feet and about 6 miles east.....the winds were over 80kts out of the SE.....we were landing on rwy 32.... field winds were called CALM.... at 1000' and a tight in base turn we still had winds out of the SE at at 50kts.......it was nice to know that we were gonna lose ALL that wind component to calm in less that 1000'.... so yea.. it was nice to know that the winds on the field were calm.
