The second part of that scenario is ... costs go up, so the tickets go up, so less people can afford to fly, demand further drops, and parent company then needs less pilots ... mainline and regional.
No matter what happens, this is going to cost the company. And that will mean jobs lost.
If the cost of the flight crew were doubled, the price of a ticket would increase by less than $3.00 per flight hour (that is based on pilot pay per seat). So a trans continental flight would increase by $10-15. If this is enough to keep people from flying (while they pay $15 for an extra bag , $10 for a window seat, or $5 for a scotch), then this industry is already doomed.
