After Redoubt blew here in Alaska. We took the coordinates of the "posts" and created pilot waypoints in the FMC to visualize the area. I worked great. We were given the waypoints when enroute, so it was our only option to visualize it. I agree that giving me waypoints doesn't do anything for me until I see a picture.
