It's simple arithmetic: for many of us, a FO slot at Compass, particularly with a commute, would be more expensive than an actual furlough (where other local, non-aviation jobs could be pursued). I'm sure it's a fine job and a fine airplane, but getting 20-30k a year while commuting to a crash pad simply wouldn't make any financial sense for many.
Flowback IS optional, NOT required. You could most certainly just take the furlough & completely bypass the flowback.
