Yeah the start switches are in the same place in the 88 as the 9... it's not all that hard.
I reached with the left hand to hold the start switch and twisted and used my right hand on the fuel control. Others do the opposite.
Weird, when I went thru MD-88 training, I was specifically critiqued for starting the engines that way. They wanted left hand on the fuel lever, right hand on the starter. It doesn't matter to me, I have long arms. But I have no idea how you do that if you are short.
